Therapeutic endoscopy has a useful place in palliative medicine. It can provide rapid and effective nonoperative relief of a number of symptoms. Endoscopy should be considered for oesophageal obstruction, obstructive jaundice, locally troublesome carcinoma of the rectum and perhaps for feeding gastrostomy. The indications for, practice of, and outcome from each of these techniques are considered.

Key Words: endoscopy • gastrointestinal intubation • gastrointestinal neoplasms • lasers • palliative treatment
