An approach to the management of the patient with deafferentation pain

Chris Glynn

Oxford Regional Pain Relief Unit and Oxford Pain Relief Research Unit, Abingdon Hospital

The problems associated with the management of a patient with deafferentation pain are highlighted by the great variety of therapies suggested, which indicates the lack of understanding of the mechanism of this type of pain. The treatment of these patients will remain a lottery until there is a clearer concept as to the underlying mechanisms. This means there is a need for more clinical research, since there is as yet no reliable experimental model.

Key Words: deafferentation pain • illness behaviour • pain • palliative treatment
