Working with a bereaved family: focusing on prevention not pathologyInstitute of Family Therapy, London Ours is not a culture which generally prepares people for death, despite the fact that death comes to us all. The author suggests that open communication following a death may reduce psychological trauma. Extracts from a family therapy session demonstrate how a healthy family can constructively face issues which follow parental death. This approach does not concentrate on pathology, instead it focuses on the family's strengths to deal with a tragic situation.
