The family and loss: a systems frameworkInstitute of Family Therapy, London, Institute of Psychiatry, London This paper introduces three important aspects of considering the difference between an individual and family focus for clinicians. These are: the family as a system; a cybernetic framework; the family life cycle. From this perspective, the impact of loss, whether or not through death, is discussed with some implications for practice.
