Management of ascites in advanced cancer - a flow diagramSt Oswald's Hospice, Newcastle upon Tyne
St Oswald's Hospice, Newcastle upon Tyne Ascites is here defined as an exudate into the peritoneal space due to malignancy. It can cause symptoms such as pain, nausea, vomiting and dyspnoea, which are most easily resolved by removing the ascites. This can be done by mechanical means (e.g. paracentesis) or pharmacological means (e.g. diuretics). This flow diagram describes the decision steps in choosing a treatment appropriate to the patient.
