Sources of stress in hospice medical directors and matrons

Ilora G Finlay

Holme Tower Marie Curie Home, Penarth, Wales

Palliative care generates considerable stress in hospice medical directors and matrons. In this survey, increased time working in the hospice correlates with suicidal thoughts in medical directors and a fear of burnout in matrons. Major sources of stress include management committees, administrative duties, relatives and the relationship between the medical director and matron.

Key Words: medical directors • nurse administrators • personal satisfaction • professional burnout • psychological stress • stressful events
