Hindu attitude toward suffering, dying and death

DL Sharma

31 Westcliffe Road, Southport, Merseyside PR8 2BL, UK

An important element of Hinduism is the attitude of detachment from suffering and attachment to God. Death is seen as a rebirth, in that the present life of an individual influences the course of the life to come. Although suffering may be seen as the result of past misdeeds, this suffering is also regarded as an unavoidable part of life which can be endured bravely. Certain practices with regard to food, drink and cleanliness are important, and their observation contributes to a Hindu's peace of mind.
