The working patterns of hospice based home care teams

Kirsty J Boyd

St Joseph's Hospice, Hackney, London

In 1990, a survey of the structure and working arrangements of 12 urban, hospice-based home care teams in the UK was carried out. The main areas of interest were staff numbers and training, visiting patterns for assessment and follow-up, workload including out-of-hours cover, and relationships with primary care teams. The role of home care services and two possible models, participatory and advisory, for provision of such services are presented and discussed.

Key Words: health services • home care services • hospice • terminal care • utilization review
