Palliative Medicine, St Oswald's Hospice, Newcastle upon Tyne Nausea and vomiting are common in advanced cancer and can have many causes. Successful treatment is possible in most patients when the clinician combines the history, symptoms, clinical examination and information about the patient's tumour, with existing knowledge about the mechanisms of nausea and vomiting. In this way antiemetics can be targeted at specific causes.
